音源としてはコペンハーゲンがDenmark Radio、ヘルシンキがYles Radioという表記があるが、いずれもエアチェックか、何かからのコピーなのか、ともかく劣化した音なので、放送音源そのものではないだろう。
内容はほとんど同じ曲の繰り返しである。〈Blue Train〉〈I Want to Talk About You〉〈Naima〉そして〈Impressions〉と〈My Favorite Things〉。この時期は、極端に言えば、来る日も来る日もマイ・フェイヴァリット・シングスだといってもよい。つまりコルトレーンの ｢おはこ｣ である。マイ・フェイヴァリット・シングスはリチャード・ロジャース作曲の《サウンド・オブ・ミュージック》で使われた曲というよりはJR東海の京都のCM曲といったほうがわかりやすい。
私のアプローチはエリック・ドルフィーからの視点であるので、ドルフィーのセッション・リストを見るとコルトレーンと同じで、11月5日の次は11月18日である。さらに遡ると、ヴィレッジ・ヴァンガードの前は、9月25日のストックホルムにおける、いわゆるストックホルム・セッションであり、10月に演奏した記録はない。
この1961年、ドルフィーには7月16日のファイヴ・スポットのセッションがあるが、その双頭ソロイストであったブッカー・リトルは10月05日に急逝している。といって、リトルが亡くなったから喪に服していたわけでもなくて、たぶん単純に仕事が無かったのだ。
ダウンビートでの人気投票にランクインしたとき、ドルフィーは ｢ランクに入ると仕事が増えるのでしょうか？｣ と聞いたとのことだ。そこそこに名前は売れてきたが、生活にはずっと不安がつきまとっていたのである。
そして《So Many Things》に収録されているヨーロッパ・ツアーの音であるが、なぜわざわざこんな音質のひどい録音を聴くのかといえば、それは前のブログに書いたように、ヴィレッジ・ヴァンガードのライヴで、ドルフィーはなぜ生気が無いのか、という疑問からである。
まず〈My Favorite Things〉ではドルフィーはいつもフルートを吹いている。おそらくこの曲ではコルトレーンがサックス、ドルフィーがフルートということに決めてあったのだと思われるが、フルートというのはいかにも弱い。
それで次のターゲットというと〈Impressions〉であるが、この曲でドルフィーはアルトを吹いている。上のリストの1、3、4、5で合計4回の〈Impressions〉が収録されている。いずれも比較的よいソロを吹いていて、それはヴィレッジ・ヴァンガードでの演奏とは異なる印象なのだけれど、出だしはよいけれど後半のアイデアが持続しないという傾向が見られる。4や5ではドルフィー特有の跳躍進行によるメロディラインが聞こえるが、それでもやはり後半が枯渇しがちである。コルトレーンがそのソロを引き継ぐと、ずっと流麗でいかにもコルトレーンという音になるのはさすがである。
私の好みでは3が一番良いソロなのではないかと思う。
〈Naima〉や〈Delilah〉といった曲ではドルフィーはバスクラを吹いていて、もっと吹けばいいのにと思うのだが、いまひとつ遠慮があるような気がする。
ひとつの仮説として私は、ドルフィーがコルトレーンに対して影が薄いのは、コルトレーンがイジワルをしてドルフィーに ｢オレより目立つなよ｣ とでも言ったのかと思っていたのだが、シモスコ＆テッパーマンなどを読み返してみたところ、元凶はプロデューサーであるボブ・シールにあるらしいことがわかってきた。つまりコルトレーンはそんなことは言わなかったが、かわりにボブ・シールがドルフィーの良い演奏の部分を、けずってしまったのである。理由としてはおそらくドルフィーがコルトレーンより目立たないように、というので正解なのだと思う。
シモスコ＆テッパーマンの翻訳者である間章も、その解説でドルフィーがコルトレーンに対して影が薄いことを書いていたので、やっぱりなあと改めて思った次第である。
ただ、単純にそれだけではなくて、つまりドルフィーは生涯、その音楽を完全に認められることがなかったのだ。それで常に経済的な不安を抱え、安いギャラの仕事に奔走し、そしてまたドルフィーの才能をかってはいたが同時にストレスを与えていたチャーリー・ミンガスのような人とも合わず、結果としてその音楽性を完全に残すことなく孤独なままに死んでしまったのだと思う。
ドルフィーは読譜力も理論にも強かったが、それゆえに器用貧乏となってうまく使われてしまった部分がある。だから逆に、オリヴァー・ネルソンのようなガッチリとしたオーケストレーションのなかで吹くとドルフィーのソロは際立つのである。
ドルフィーはパーカー直系のサックスであり、そんな言い方は以前にはトリッキーな意見として黙殺されていたのかもしれないが、歴史が積み重なるにつれ、だんだんとその流れが理解されつつあるように思う。それはバルトークがバッハに対抗して無伴奏ヴァイオリンを書いたのと同じで、最初はまるで違うもののように邪慳にされていたが、次第にそれが理解されてきたのと似ている。
1961年当時、下にリンクした動画〈My Favorite Things〉のような演奏はアヴァンギャルド過ぎて非ジャズであると非難を浴びた。イギリスでコルトレーンは受け入れられなかった。かつてのストラヴィンスキーのように、芸術とは常に非難のなかから生まれる。
